2nd Annual Angel City Games To Feature Athletes With Physical Disabilities

The 2nd Annual Angel City Games, a multi-sport competition for people with physical disabilities, will be held July 7-10, 2016 at UCLA’s Drake Stadium and will feature adaptive sports clinics and competitions for children, adults, veterans, and active-duty military personnel with physical disabilities.

Participants will include elite-level as well as recreational and first-time athletes of all ages and ability levels. The events are open to individuals with any physical difference or mobility impairment, including amputation, spinal cord injury, paraplegia, quadriplegia, spina bifida, cerebral palsy, multiple sclerosis, blindness or visual impairment, TBI or head injury, stroke, muscular dystrophy, and dwarfism. Throughout the weekend, participants and guests can enjoy a large vendor expo, medal presentations, a celebrity wheelchair basketball game, toddler events for families, and much more.

“The Angel City Games is a powerful event that showcases the talent, tenacity, and beauty of athletes with physical differences or impairments,” notes Clayton Frech, Founder and CEO of Angel City Sports. “Our first event last year was a big success in both athlete participation and public awareness for adaptive sports. We’ve expanded the 2016 Games to four days with more sports and events, and have big plans to grow the Paralympic movement throughout the region.”

Participation in the Adaptive Sports Clinics is free. Competition registration fees for athletes vary from $20 to $40 and are available through the event website; onsite registration on the day of the events will not be available. The Angel City Games was developed in conjunction with UCLA Adaptive Recreation, and is sanctioned by Adaptive Sports USA.

Angel City Sports began in June 2013 when Clayton and Ezra Frech were on the track at the Endeavor Games in Oklahoma City and asked the question, “Why do we need to come to tornado alley to run, jump, and throw things?

Why aren’t there more programs in Southern California?” The result was the Angel City Games, the only multi-sport competition in Los Angeles open to individuals with any physical difference or mobility impairment.

The Games feature adaptive sports clinics and competitions for children, adults, veterans, and active-duty military personnel with physical disabilities, as well as vendor expos, medal presentations, celebrity games, and events for families.

Participants include elite-level as well as recreational and first-time athletes of all ages and ability levels. With the success of the Games, Angel City Sports hopes to address a myriad of challenges – lack of events, programs, training, and coaches, transportation and access, the high cost of equipment, and the expansive geography of Southern California – and spark the Paralympic and Adaptive Sport movement in Southern California and across the country.
