What’s inside?

Mikey’s Message: Jon Jordan revisits the story of his life with his brother “Mikey” (first published in June of 1998), who passed away on September 29th, 2009, after the latest in his lifetime of medical battles, at the age of 25.

I. A.C.C.E.P.T. M.E. Strategies for Developing Self-Acceptance when Parenting Children who Challenge: The focus of this article is to guide parents of children who display challenging behaviors to accept trials head on and to persevere amidst threats to their self acceptance as effective parents.

Root Wrapping: Redwood trees have shallow root systems, but intertwine and hold fast as storms blow in from the ocean. The might of the tree isn’t in itself. It is held up by its brothers and sisters. We as humans do the same as storms blow into our lives.

You Want Her To Have A What?: Elyse’s parents share their story of coming to realize that their daughter should have the opportunity that every other Jewish girl has – to demonstrate her Jewish soul by having a Bat Mitzvah and celebrating her miraculous life along with friends and family.

My Journey Towards Acceptance: One mother shares what she experienced with the birth of her daughter, Gianna, with Down Syndrome.  “The birth of a child with special needs brings conflicting emotions,” states Rahill. “The path forward is one that takes courage and faith.”

Lessons Learned - Parents of Children with Disabilities Offer Recommendations for Strategies that Work: Eight lessons learned from dealing with disability within the family that study participants said ensured a happy, health life for all members. Within these lessons are concrete ideas for dealing with disabilities within a family.
