CALIFORNIAN GOVERNOR JERRY BROWN SIGNS SCID SCREENING INTO LAW
The Save Babies Through Screening Foundation applauds California Governor Jerry Brown for signing into law Assembly Bill 395, making screening for Severe Combined Immunodeficiency (SCID) a permanent addition to the California’s Newborn Screening Program.
Children born with SCID lack the immune system needed for protection against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Most die in infancy if not treated, as they are simply unable to cope with the infections, which would not be serious in a child with a healthy immune system. With screening at birth and subsequent confirmatory early diagnosis, infants with SCID can be treated before their systems are severely compromised. Treatment with bone marrow transplantation completely cures these children of their debilitating disease.

KANSAS PROMOTES SEPTEMBER AS NEWBORN SCREENING MONTH
Topeka— The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) is proud to promote Newborn Screening Awareness Month in September. While most newborns look perfectly healthy, there are some diseases that aren't visible. Unless these diseases are identified and treated early, they can cause severe illness, mental retardation, or in some cases death. To test for these diseases, about 24 hours after birth, a baby's heel is pricked and a small sample of blood is collected by the hospital staff. This blood is then sent to the State public health laboratory where it is tested for several different diseases. If the test is abnormal, re-testing must be done to confirm a diagnosis.
